0-6 month old newborns • Skin contact product
For infants and newborns (0–6 months), chamomile (Roman/Anthemis Nobilis) flower oil should be treated with caution. While many adults tolerate it, babies have very sensitive skin and there are reports of allergic skin reactions and some evidence of irritation.
Avoid applying chamomile essential oil directly to a baby’s skin. Do not use undiluted oils on infants. Prefer products that are specifically formulated and tested for babies and list safe concentrations. If you need to soothe skin, choose plain, fragrance-free baby products tested for newborns. If a product with chamomile is used, test on a small area of older child skin first (not on an infant), keep it away from the face and hands, and stop immediately if you see redness, rash, swelling, or fussiness.
Watch for redness, rash, swelling, blistering, or any sudden breathing or behavior changes after exposure. Human case reports have shown allergic contact dermatitis can occur from Roman chamomile preparations, and regulatory safety reviews note limited evidence of skin irritation; some animal studies report effects only at high doses. Because of these reports and the special sensitivity of infant skin, it’s safest to avoid using this oil on babies under 6 months unless a pediatrician or product labeled for that age recommends it.
