0-6 month old newborns • Skin contact product
For newborns and babies 0-6 months, cedarwood oil is best avoided. Although the ingredient has low overall hazard in general, there is some evidence it can irritate skin, eyes, or airways and a small possibility of other toxic effects. Babies’ skin and breathing are more sensitive than older children’s, so we should be extra careful.
Do not put cedarwood oil directly on infants under 6 months. Avoid using room diffusers with essential oils when a baby is present. If a product lists cedarwood oil and is marketed for babies, check that it’s specifically formulated and tested for infants and talk with your pediatrician first. For older babies (over 6 months), if you decide to use products with cedarwood oil, choose products made for children, use a very low concentration, avoid the face and hands, and do a small patch test on the leg first. Stop use and call your pediatrician if you see redness, swelling, rash, wheezing, coughing, or any breathing changes.
Do not apply undiluted cedarwood oil to an infant’s skin. Avoid inhalation exposure (no diffusers close to the crib). Watch for skin irritation, eye irritation, or breathing problems. These cautions come from limited evidence of irritation reported by the European Chemicals Agency and notes about possible organ system effects from Environment Canada. Also be aware some product safety programs restrict or require proof for this ingredient.
