0-6 month old newborns • Skin contact product
For newborns and infants (0–6 months), licorice root extract is not ideal. Although small amounts in some products may be tolerated, scientific reviews show licorice can affect hormones and the heart when it gets into the body. Babies’ skin absorbs more than adults’, so there is a higher chance of unwanted effects.
Avoid using products with licorice root extract on babies under 6 months when possible. If you must use a product that contains it, use a very small amount on a tiny patch of normal skin for a short time and watch closely. Do not apply to broken skin, diaper areas, or large parts of the body. If you see any skin reaction or any change in feeding, sleepiness, heart rate, breathing, or swelling, stop use and call your pediatrician.
Scientific reviews and human reports indicate licorice can disrupt adrenal (hormone) function and may affect the heart and liver (see Toxicological Effects of Glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice): A Review (2017) and Bioactive Candy: Effects of Licorice on the Cardiovascular System (2019)). Animal studies suggest possible developmental and nervous system effects at higher doses (Liquorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra): A phytochemical and pharmacological review (2018)). Watch for: redness, rash, swelling, hives, trouble breathing (allergic reaction); unusual sleepiness, poor feeding, swelling, or a very fast heartbeat or very high blood pressure (possible systemic effects). If any of these occur, stop use immediately and seek medical care.
