0-6 month old newborns • Skin contact product
For newborns and babies under 6 months, do not use manuka honey on their skin. There are reports of severe allergic reactions from honey and some contamination concerns. Babies are more vulnerable than older children and adults.
Do not put manuka honey on infants under 12 months, including on the face or near the mouth. If you’re considering using it for a cut or skin issue on an older child, talk with a pediatrician first. If a product marketed for babies lists manuka honey, avoid it for infants under 1 year and keep it out of reach.
Watch for redness, swelling, hives, or breathing trouble after any contact — human case reports have described anaphylaxis and contact urticaria after exposure to honey. There are also contamination concerns (a compound called 5‑hydroxymethylfurfural) and at least one animal study showing hormone effects at high doses. Because of these reports and contamination issues, this ingredient is not recommended for infants. If any reaction occurs, stop use and seek medical help immediately.
