For newborns and infants (0–6 months) it’s best to avoid melatonin on the skin. Although safety lists show low concerns for cancer and allergy, melatonin is a hormone and we don’t have good studies of putting it on babies’ skin.
Do not use products containing melatonin on babies under 6 months. If a pediatrician recommends it for an older child, apply only a tiny amount to a small area once, avoid broken skin and the face, and watch the baby closely for any sleepiness, fussiness, or feeding problems. Stop use and call your pediatrician if you notice anything unusual.
A public ingredient safety resource notes low concerns for cancer, allergy and reproductive effects, but there is little or no testing in infants. Because melatonin is a hormone, avoid topical use on babies under 6 months, keep products out of reach, and do not use on broken skin or near the mouth and eyes. If the baby becomes unusually sleepy, has trouble feeding, or shows strange behavior after exposure, contact your pediatrician or poison control.
