1-2 year old toddlers • Skin contact product
For toddlers (1–2 years): capsicum (capsaicin) can sting and cause redness, tears or coughing if it gets near the eyes, nose or mouth. It is not recommended for babies, and should be used very carefully for toddlers. The main risk is irritation, not long-term poisoning.
Avoid products with capsicum on babies and use only products made and labeled for young children. If you must try a product on a toddler, do a patch test on a small area of the thigh and wait 24 hours. Do not put capsicum-containing products near the face, hands, diaper area or broken skin. If you see any burning, intense redness, swelling or blisters, stop use and wash the area with water.
The Cosmetic Ingredient Review notes skin, eye and lung irritation is possible — that is the main concern to watch for. Keep capsicum-containing products away from the eyes and mouth, avoid wipes or lotions that might contact the face or diaper area, and avoid on irritated or broken skin. If the child has trouble breathing, severe swelling, or the product gets in the eyes and pain or vision problems continue, seek medical care right away. Regulators (FDA, Environment Canada) list it as acceptable in limited uses, and long-term risks such as cancer or developmental harm are reported as low, so the immediate worry is irritation and accidental eye/mouth exposure.
