1-2 year old toddlers • Skin contact product
For toddlers (1-2 years) this oil can cause allergic skin reactions and irritation. Because young children have sensitive skin and are more likely to get products in their mouth or near their eyes, use extra caution.
Do not use pure (undiluted) tea tree oil on a toddler. Prefer products specifically made for young children. If you try a new product that contains this oil, do a small patch test on a tiny area of the child’s arm and wait 24–48 hours to check for redness or rash. Use only low concentrations and avoid the face, especially around the nose and mouth. Keep all products with this oil locked away and out of reach.
Watch for redness, swelling, itching, blisters, or breathing changes — these are signs of an allergic reaction or irritation (sensitization and skin irritation have been reported in clinical studies and expert reviews). There is limited evidence linking this oil to hormone-related effects in children (reported in a 2007 case report). Expert reviews have also noted possible systemic effects and that the oil can increase skin absorption of other ingredients. If you see any reaction, stop use and call your pediatrician. Do not give the oil by mouth and avoid applying to broken skin (sources: German Contact Dermatitis study 2003; Opinion and reviews on tea tree oil 2008; Cosmetic Ingredient Review and related reports).
