1-2 year old toddlers • Skin contact product
For toddlers (1–2 years), red clover extract in topical products is generally very low risk. It is considered safe in small amounts and has low concern for cancer or effects on growth. Most children can use products containing it without problems.
Before using a new product on your toddler’s skin, do a small patch test on a thigh or inner arm and wait 24–48 hours. Use products made for children when possible, avoid applying to broken or very irritated skin, and keep creams away from the eyes, nose and mouth. If your child has a history of eczema or plant allergies, test carefully or ask your pediatrician.
Watch for any new redness, rash, swelling, itching, or other irritation and stop use if these appear. Although overall concern is low, plant extracts can cause rare allergic reactions. Note that public safety listings and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration list red clover as having low concern and safe for limited use in food; still, topical allergic reactions are the main thing to watch for in children.
