1-2 year old toddlers • Skin contact product
For a toddler (1–2 years) this pansy/viola flower extract is usually low risk on the skin. Most problems reported are rare and from lab or animal work, not from normal small amounts used on a child’s skin.
If you plan to use a product with this extract on a toddler: 1) Do a small patch test on the inside of the arm and wait 24 hours. 2) Use only a small amount and avoid covering large areas. 3) Don’t put it on broken or irritated skin. 4) Stop use right away if you see redness, swelling, rash, or any unusual behaviour (sleepiness, shaking). 5) Ask your pediatrician before use if your child has a history of seizures or a weakened immune system.
Two studies noted reasons to be cautious: one showed effects on the nervous system in animals (Anticonvulsant Activity of Viola tricolor against Seizures Induced by Pentylenetetrazol and Maximal Electroshock in Mice, 2019) and another reported immune-related effects in lab research (Immunosuppressive activity of an aqueous Viola tricolor herbal extract, 2014). These findings came from controlled lab or animal studies, not from normal topical use in toddlers, but they are why caregivers should avoid heavy, frequent, or long-term use and watch closely for any skin reaction or unusual symptoms. If your child has seizure disorder or immune problems, check with your doctor first.
