2-5 year old preschoolers • Skin contact product
For kids aged 2-5 (toddlers and preschoolers), cod liver oil used on the skin is generally low risk. It’s a fish oil used in some moisturizers. Serious problems are uncommon, but some children can get skin irritation or an allergic reaction.
Before using more widely, do a small patch test on the inside of the forearm and wait 24 hours. Use only a small amount on normal, unbroken skin. Keep it away from the child’s eyes and mouth and don’t let the child lick the product. Check the label for added ingredients (fragrance, preservatives) that can cause sensitivity. If you know your child has a fish or seafood allergy, avoid use or check with your child’s clinician first.
Watch for redness, swelling, itching, hives, or any breathing changes after use and stop immediately if these happen. Do not apply to broken, sore, or very inflamed skin. Avoid ingestion — topical products can contain amounts of vitamins and other additives not intended to be eaten. The low-risk classification and the note that it is not expected to be toxic come from Environment Canada, which evaluated this ingredient.
