2-5 year old preschoolers • Skin contact product
For children aged 2–5 years (toddlers and preschoolers), lavender oil is usually low risk but not necessary. It can sometimes irritate the skin or, rarely, be linked to hormone-related concerns in children in case reports.
If you choose to use products with lavender oil on a 2–5 year old: 1) use only products made for children or very mild formulations, 2) never put undiluted oil on the skin — dilute well or choose a ready-made cream, 3) do a small patch test on the inside of the arm and wait 24 hours before wider use, 4) avoid applying near the face, mouth or eyes, 5) do not let the child ingest the oil or use concentrated diffusers for long periods, and 6) stop use and see a doctor if you see redness, rash, swelling, breathing changes, or any unusual breast swelling or nipple changes.
Watch for skin irritation or allergic reactions (see reports on plant-induced dermatitis, 2002). There are isolated case reports linking lavender to hormone-related effects in children (2007; 2019), so avoid repeated, concentrated topical use in young children. Also note some product certification programs restrict this oil in baby products unless safety is shown.
