2-5 year old preschoolers • Skin contact product
For toddlers and preschoolers (ages 2–5): tea tree oil can help fight germs but can also cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. There are a few reports suggesting hormonal effects in children and some evidence it increases how much gets into the body, so it should be used carefully.
If you choose to use a product that contains tea tree oil on a child 2–5 years old: 1) Prefer products made and labeled for children or that list a low concentration of tea tree oil. 2) Never apply the pure (undiluted) essential oil directly to a child’s skin. 3) Do a small patch test on the inside of the forearm and wait 24–48 hours for any reaction before wider use. 4) Avoid using it on the face, near the eyes, nose, mouth, or on broken skin. 5) Do not diffuse strong amounts in small, enclosed spaces with young children present. 6) Stop use and see a doctor if you see rash, swelling, breathing trouble, or unusual behavior.
Watch for skin redness, itching, blistering, or swelling — case reports and clinical studies have documented allergic skin reactions (see German Contact Dermatitis Group study, 2003; regulatory reviews such as the Cosmetic Ingredient Review and European Chemicals Agency evaluations). There are a few reports linking tea tree oil to hormone-related effects in children (case reports from 2007), and some studies and reviews note it can increase absorption through the skin. Some safety programs restrict or limit its use in products unless backed by safety data. If a child has a history of sensitive skin or allergies, consult your pediatrician before using products that contain this ingredient.
