For toddlers and young children (2–5 years), potassium hydroxide can be irritating. It’s less risky than for babies under 2, but it still can cause skin or eye irritation if the product is not made to control its strength.
Try to avoid products with potassium hydroxide for everyday skin care of toddlers. If a product lists it, prefer rinse-off items (like some cleansers) that are specifically labeled safe for children and come from reputable brands. Do a small skin patch test first (apply a tiny amount to the inside of the arm and watch for 24 hours). Stop use and rinse well right away if the child’s skin becomes red, sore, or starts to burn.
Do not use products containing potassium hydroxide on broken skin, on or near the eyes, or on very sensitive areas. Regulatory reviews (EU Cosmetics Directive and Cosmetic Ingredient Review) note that its use is restricted and it must be limited or formulated to avoid irritation. Toxicology sources (U.S. National Library of Medicine) report possible skin and eye irritation. Keep products containing it out of reach and never let a child handle concentrated solutions (these are caustic).
