2-5 year old preschoolers • Skin contact product
For preschool children (ages 2–5), propolis used on the skin is generally low risk. Safety reports (including Environment Canada) do not flag serious toxic effects. Still, because it’s a bee product some kids can get skin reactions.
If you want to use a product with propolis on a 2–5 year old, first do a patch test: put a tiny amount on the inside of the forearm and wait 24 hours. Use only a small amount to start, keep it away from the mouth, eyes and any broken skin, and do not use on large areas. Stop use right away if you see redness, swelling, itching, blisters or any breathing changes and call your child’s doctor.
Environment Canada notes this ingredient is not expected to be toxic and is not persistent, but parents should still watch for allergic skin reactions. Avoid use if your child has a known allergy to bee products (honey, royal jelly, bee stings) or has active eczema or very sensitive skin. Do not let the child ingest propolis-containing products and seek medical care for any swelling, severe rash or breathing difficulty.
