5+ year old children • Skin contact product
For children 5 years and older (kids, school-aged children, pre-teens), Roman chamomile flower oil used on the skin is usually safe when it is already mixed into a product. Most experts call it low risk, but a small number of people can get allergic skin reactions and there are a few animal studies that showed effects only at very high doses.
Use products where the oil is already diluted (finished creams or lotions). Do not put undiluted chamomile oil directly on a child's skin. Before broader use, do a small patch test on the inside of the forearm and wait 24 hours to check for redness or swelling. Avoid using it on broken, scratched, or irritated skin and keep it away from the eyes and mouth. If your child has known plant or flower allergies, or asthma, talk to your pediatrician before using. If any rash, swelling, or breathing trouble starts, stop use and seek medical advice.
There are medical case reports of allergic contact dermatitis from Roman chamomile (a 1991 case report) — watch for new rashes. A European regulatory review found limited evidence that it can irritate the skin in some people. A few animal studies reported neuromuscular effects at very high doses (studies in 2017 and 2018) — these were not from normal topical use. Some safety reviews say it is safe when used within concentration limits, and some product verification programs restrict use unless a company provides extra safety proof. Do not let children ingest this oil; only use as directed on the product label.
