5+ year old children • Skin contact product
For children aged 5 and older (school-age kids and teens), chamomile oil used on the skin in normal amounts is usually safe. Most problems reported are uncommon and involve skin allergy. There is limited data and a few isolated reports that suggest you should be cautious.
Before using a product with chamomile oil on your child, do a small patch test on the forearm and wait 24 hours to check for redness or itching. Use products that list chamomile at a low concentration and avoid concentrated chamomile essential oil. Do not apply to broken, sore, or irritated skin. If your child has known allergies to ragweed, daisies, or related plants, avoid chamomile products unless a doctor says it’s okay.
Watch for rash, redness, swelling, itching, or any breathing difficulty and stop use right away if these happen. Allergic contact dermatitis has been reported (see: "Allergic contact dermatitis of the nipple from Roman chamomile ointment (1991)"). A systematic review noted some equivocal reports about neurologic effects (see: "A systematic review study of therapeutic effects of Matricaria recuitta chamomile (2016)"). Regulatory reviews have flagged limited data on safety (see: Cosmetic Ingredient Review and European Chemicals Agency). Because of these reports, avoid concentrated essential oils and consult your child’s doctor if your child has a history of plant allergies or if you are unsure.
