5+ year old children • Skin contact product
For children 5 years and older (school-age kids), fractionated coconut oil is generally safe to put on the skin. It’s lightweight and often used to moisturize or to dilute other products.
Pick a pure, fragrance-free product. Before widespread use, put a small amount on the inside of the child’s forearm and wait 24 hours to check for a reaction. Use only a little at first. If you mix in other oils, make sure those are safe for children and are well diluted. Stop use and wash the area if you see redness, rash, swelling, or the child has any breathing difficulty; call your pediatrician if symptoms are worrying.
The ingredient’s safety summary notes low concerns for cancer, allergies, developmental or reproductive effects, and for regulatory restrictions. Even so, avoid this oil if your child has a known coconut allergy (individual reactions can occur). Do not apply to broken or raw skin, avoid getting it in the eyes, and be cautious with products that add fragrances or other ingredients—those can cause irritation even if the oil itself is low risk.
