For children 5 years and older, this ingredient (a mild cleanser) is usually safe when used in regular skin-cleansing products. Most kids won’t have problems, but a small number of people have had allergic skin reactions.
Use products that are made for kids and follow the product directions. If your child has sensitive skin or eczema, do a small patch test first: put a little of the product on the inside of the forearm and wait 24 hours. Avoid using on broken or sore skin. If you see redness, itching, swelling, or a rash, stop using the product and wash the area with water. If the reaction is widespread or gets worse, contact your pediatrician. No special dilution is usually needed for normal products.
There are case reports of allergic contact reactions in humans (see: "Patch testing with alkyl glucosides: Concomitant reactions are common but not ubiquitous" (2019) and "Allergic contact dermatitis caused by alkyl glucosides" (2014)). An older review noted male reproductive effects in animals at moderate doses (see: "Ecology and Toxicology of Alkyl Polyglycosides" (2004)). These are the reasons to watch for skin reactions and to check with your child’s doctor if your child uses the product a lot or has repeated skin irritation.
