5+ year old children • Skin contact product
For children 5 years and older (school-age kids and teens), hydrolyzed casein is usually safe when used on the skin. It’s a milk protein that conditions skin and most children won’t have a problem with it.
If your child does not have a milk or dairy allergy, you can use products with hydrolyzed casein on normal, unbroken skin. Do a small patch test on the inside of the arm and wait 24 hours before using widely. Avoid putting products with this ingredient on broken or very irritated skin, and keep it away from the eyes and mouth.
The main thing to watch for is an allergic reaction in a child allergic to milk (rash, redness, itching, hives, swelling or breathing trouble). Government review found it is not expected to be toxic (Environment Canada) and industry reviewers note some recommendations or limits on use or manufacturing (Cosmetic Ingredient Review). If you see any signs of allergy, stop use and seek medical care. Also note some brands or verification programs may restrict this ingredient unless manufacturers provide extra safety information.
