5+ year old children • Skin contact product
For children 5 years and older (school-age kids), lanolin alcohol is usually safe and is used to soften and protect skin. But it can cause allergic skin reactions in some people, so it’s not risk-free.
Before using a new product with lanolin alcohol on your child, do a small patch test on the inside of the forearm and wait 24–48 hours. Use products as directed and avoid applying to broken or very irritated skin. If your child has a known wool or lanolin allergy, choose lanolin-free products. If you see redness, itching, swelling, blisters, or any new rash, stop use and check with your child’s healthcare provider.
Watch for allergic reactions (itching, redness, swelling, rash). This warning comes from the Cosmetic Ingredient Review, which found strong evidence that lanolin-derived alcohols can be skin allergens. Also note that Environment Canada has listed some health concerns for the ingredient, and some products restrict its use or limit concentration. Avoid use on broken skin and avoid if your child has a known wool or lanolin sensitivity.
