5+ year old children • Skin contact product
For school-age children (5 years and older), small amounts of lavender oil in products made for kids are usually okay. The strongest concerns come from a few reports that linked lavender oil to hormonal changes in some young children and from occasional skin allergies.
Use only products made for children that list lavender oil at low concentrations. Never put undiluted lavender oil directly on a child’s skin. Do a patch test on a small area (inside forearm) and wait 24 hours. If there is redness, itching, or swelling, stop using it. Avoid applying products with lavender oil repeatedly to the chest/breast area. Keep products out of reach and follow the product label.
Watch for skin redness, itching, swelling, or any unusual breast tissue changes. There are case reports from 2007 and 2019 that linked lavender oil to early breast tissue changes in some children — although these are limited reports, they are the reason for extra caution. There is also older evidence noting plant-based skin allergies (2002). Additionally, some product verification programs or manufacturers restrict use of this ingredient unless safety is proven, so choose reputable, child-friendly products.
