5+ year old children • Skin contact product
For children 5 years and older, tea tree oil can be used on the skin in low amounts, but it commonly causes skin allergies and irritation. There are a few reports suggesting rare hormone-related effects, so use caution.
Use only products made for kids or products that list a low concentration of tea tree oil. Never put undiluted tea tree oil directly on a child’s skin. Do a small patch test on the inner forearm and wait 24–48 hours before wider use. Avoid the face, eyes, mouth and broken skin. If you see redness, itching, swelling, hives, or any breathing changes, stop use and contact your child’s doctor.
Watch for allergic reactions and skin irritation — clinical sensitization studies and contact dermatitis reports have identified this as the main concern (German Contact Dermatitis Group and related studies). Also note regulatory safety reviews (Cosmetic Ingredient Review, European Chemicals Agency) report limited evidence of hormone-related and developmental effects in some case reports; this is why we recommend caution and dilution. Some product safety programs restrict its use unless supported by safety data — look for products specifically formulated and tested for children.
