For children aged 5 years and up, melatonin applied to the skin is probably low risk when used occasionally and in small amounts. However, there is not much research on putting this hormone on kids’ skin, so we recommend extra caution.
If you try a product with melatonin on a child 5 or older: do a small patch test on the inside of the forearm first; only use a small amount on a limited area; avoid broken or irritated skin; don’t use it near the eyes or mouth; do not combine with oral melatonin or other sleep medicines without checking your child’s doctor; stop use and call your pediatrician if you see redness, rash, drowsiness that seems unusual, or any change in behavior.
A well-known ingredient safety database lists only low-level concerns for cancer, allergies, and developmental/reproductive effects, but also notes limited data for topical use in children. Because melatonin is a hormone and can be absorbed through skin, avoid regular or large-area use on children, and consult your child’s pediatrician before regular use or if your child takes melatonin or other medicines by mouth.
