For kids aged 5 and up (school-age children, children, older kids), water used on the skin is very safe. It’s the basic ingredient in cleansers, lotions and wipes and carries very low health concern when clean and used in normal products.
Use products where water is in a sealed, labeled product (look for ‘purified’ or ‘filtered’ water) and that include a preservative if the product is meant to be stored. Keep bottles and wipes closed, store them at room temperature, and use by the expiration date. For quick face or hand washing at home, tap water is fine for children 5+. If you make your own products, use boiled-and-cooled or sterile water and add a suitable preservative for anything that will be stored.
Avoid using plain water that has been sitting open in bottles or homemade wipes without preservative — bacteria and mold can grow (this is the main safety concern noted in the ingredient report and in Environment Canada’s assessments). Stop use and see a doctor if your child’s skin becomes red, swollen, warm, develops pus, or if they get a fever after applying a product. If water smells off or looks cloudy, discard it and the product container.
