6-12 month old babies • Skin contact product
Coconut oil is usually safe for babies 6-12 months when used on the skin. It’s a common moisturiser and is low risk for cancer or long-term harm, but some babies can get mild irritation.
Before using more widely, put a tiny dab on a small patch of your baby’s inner arm or belly and wait 24 hours. Use plain, unscented coconut oil and a small amount. Avoid getting it in the baby’s eyes or mouth. Do not apply to open or very broken skin. If your baby has a history of food allergies or you see redness, swelling, fussiness, hives, or breathing changes, stop and talk with your pediatrician.
Watch for skin redness, a rash, or eye irritation (this is noted in peer-reviewed studies and industry safety reviews). One older animal study reported tumors at high doses (reported by the EPA) — this was not in people and was at much higher exposures than typical topical use. Also keep in mind that coconut oil appears in foods and other products, so overall exposure can add up (noted by food safety authorities). If a product lists “coconut essential oil” or strong fragrances, avoid it for babies.
