6-12 month old babies • Skin contact product
Comfrey root can carry harmful plant chemicals that can hurt the liver. For babies aged 6–12 months (infants), using comfrey on the skin is unsafe because their skin soaks up more and their bodies are small.
Do not use products that list comfrey, Symphytum officinale, or comfrey root on infants or babies. If you find a product with comfrey, choose an alternative that is labeled safe for babies or check with your child’s pediatrician. If comfrey was put on your baby’s skin, wash the area with soap and water and call your pediatrician if you notice any unusual symptoms (vomiting, yellowing of the skin or eyes, tiredness, poor feeding).
Avoid applying comfrey to babies, avoid broken or irritated skin, and never give comfrey by mouth. These warnings are based on reports and regulatory actions showing comfrey can cause serious liver injury (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) and on animal studies showing tumor risk and contamination with pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Keep any product containing comfrey out of reach of children.
