For babies aged 6–12 months, eucalyptol can cause skin reactions or breathing irritation in some children. It is not usually linked to cancer or long-term developmental harm, but it is more likely than many ingredients to trigger allergies or skin irritation.
Avoid routine use of products that list eucalyptol (also called cineole) on babies under 1 year. If a product with eucalyptol must be used on a child older than 6 months, pick a very low concentration, never apply near the nose, mouth or chest, and test a small patch of skin (inner forearm) and wait 24 hours before wider use. Stop use and wash the area if you see redness, rash, or swelling. If the child coughs, wheezes, has noisy breathing, or shows any breathing trouble after exposure, get medical help right away.
Do not put eucalyptol-containing products on an infant’s face, nose, or chest — breathing problems can occur. The U.S. EPA has strong evidence it can be a human allergen and the European Chemicals Agency reports dermal allergy concerns; some product certification programs restrict its use without strong safety data. Watch for skin redness, swelling, rash, persistent coughing, wheeze, or difficulty breathing and contact your pediatrician or emergency services if breathing changes occur.
