6-12 month old babies • Skin contact product
For babies 6–12 months (infants), hydrolyzed casein is low risk for most children. It is a protein from milk used to condition skin. Most healthy babies are unlikely to have problems, but because it comes from milk there is a small risk for babies who are allergic to cow’s milk.
If your baby is healthy with no known milk allergy, this ingredient is generally okay at normal product levels. Still, test first: put a small amount of the product on a patch of your baby’s inner forearm and wait 24 hours to check for redness or a rash. Avoid using products with this ingredient on broken skin or on babies with active eczema. If your baby has a known cow’s milk allergy, choose products without milk-derived ingredients and talk with your pediatrician if unsure.
Do not use if your baby has a known cow’s milk allergy or if they develop redness, swelling, hives, or breathing trouble after application — stop use and seek medical help. Be cautious with babies who have eczema or very sensitive skin. Note: government and industry reviews (Environment Canada; Cosmetic Ingredient Review) call this ingredient low in toxicity but recommend manufacturing and purity controls and sometimes usage limits, which is why some products may restrict its use.
