6-12 month old babies • Skin contact product
For babies 6–12 months old, peppermint (Mentha piperita) can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. It may also bother a baby’s breathing if used near the face. Because of this, it’s best to avoid putting peppermint or peppermint oil on a baby’s skin.
Prefer unscented products for your baby. Do not apply peppermint or products listing mentha/peppermint to a baby’s face, chest, or neck. If a product with peppermint is being considered, check with your pediatrician first. If instructed to try it, use only a very tiny diluted amount on a small area of the leg and watch for 48 hours for redness, swelling, rash, coughing, or breathing changes. Keep all peppermint-containing products out of reach.
Peppermint is listed as a known allergen or has evidence of causing allergies by regulatory and fragrance authorities (EU Cosmetics Directive, European Chemicals Agency, International Fragrance Association, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency). There is also limited evidence it can irritate skin, eyes, or lungs (European Chemicals Agency). Avoid use on infants, and watch for: redness, rash, swelling, blisters, eye irritation, coughing, wheeze, or trouble breathing. If any of these occur, wash the area with water, stop use, and contact your pediatrician or urgent care right away.
