6-12 month old babies • Skin contact product
For babies 6–12 months (infants), papain can irritate the skin, eyes, or lungs and can cause allergic reactions in some people. Because babies’ skin is still sensitive, I recommend being cautious with products that contain papain.
Avoid using products with papain on baby’s face, around the eyes, mouth, or on broken or red skin. Prefer products that rinse off rather than leave-on exfoliants. If you must use a product with papain, do a small patch test on the baby’s arm and wait 24–48 hours before wider use. Do not use powdered or spray forms near the baby’s face to avoid breathing it in. Read ingredient lists for alternate names (papain, papaine, papainase, vegetable pepsin). If you see any redness, swelling, rash, coughing or breathing trouble, stop use and contact your pediatrician.
Primary concerns come from hazard classifications and health reports: it is labeled an eye, skin and lung irritant (EU GHS Hazard Labeling Codes) and there is evidence it can cause respiratory or immune reactions in people (Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics and medical literature). Some product verification programs restrict its use unless safety is shown. Also, official food authorities note it may be used in limited, specific food applications (FDA), but that does not mean it is automatically safe for delicate infant skin. Watch for: immediate redness, swelling, hives, persistent crying, wheeze or difficulty breathing. If any of these occur, stop use and seek medical help.
