6-12 month old babies • Skin contact product
For babies 6–12 months old, propolis is generally low risk when put on the skin, but because it comes from bees it can cause allergic skin reactions in some children. Overall it is not thought to be poisonous or to build up in the body.
If you want to use a product with propolis on a 6–12 month old baby, test a very small amount first: apply a pea-sized drop to a small area of intact skin on the baby’s inner forearm or thigh and wait 24–48 hours. Use only a small amount, avoid the face and areas near the mouth and eyes, and do not use on broken or sore skin. Stop use if you see any redness, swelling, rash, or if the baby seems uncomfortable. Talk to your baby’s pediatrician before using propolis if your baby has eczema or a known allergy to bee products.
Watch for signs of an allergic reaction (redness, bumps, swelling, hives, swelling of lips or tongue, or trouble breathing). If any of these happen, stop use and seek medical care right away. The safety notes above come from Environment Canada’s assessment of the ingredient. Even though overall hazards like cancer or reproductive harm are rated low, allergy remains the main concern.
