For adults: cedarwood oil is generally low risk for skin use when diluted. Most safety concerns are small, but some people may get mild skin, eye, or breathing irritation.
If you use cedarwood oil on your skin, dilute it in a carrier oil (for example a few drops of cedarwood oil per tablespoon of olive or jojoba oil). Do a small patch test on the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours. Avoid getting it in your eyes or on broken or irritated skin. Use it sparingly and stop if you get redness, itching, rash, or breathing symptoms. If you have asthma or other lung problems, talk to your healthcare provider before using strong essential oils.
Watch for skin redness, itching, rashes, watery eyes, coughing or shortness of breath. These irritation concerns come from assessments by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and Environment Canada, which reported limited evidence of eye, skin, and respiratory irritation and flagged possible non-reproductive organ effects. Also be aware that some product-safety programs require testing before allowing cedarwood oil in verified products.
