adults • Skin contact product
For adults, manuka honey applied to the skin is usually safe and often used to moisturize or soothe. Most people have no problems, but a few people have had allergic reactions.
Before using widely, do a patch test: put a small amount on the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours. If you have a known allergy to bees or pollen, avoid using it. If you plan to use on a deep wound or severe skin break, ask a healthcare professional first. Buy from reputable brands and avoid honey that has been overheated or looks old (this can raise impurity levels). Stop use and get medical help if you see sudden swelling, breathing trouble, hives, or worsening skin symptoms.
Watch for allergic reactions — human case reports have described anaphylaxis and contact urticaria after exposure to honey (see: 'Anaphylaxis caused by honey' (2017) and 'A case of contact urticaria syndrome...' (2016)). An animal study reported endocrine effects at high doses ('Effect of honey on the reproductive system of male rat offspring exposed to prenatal restraint stress' (2016)), but that was at high exposures and in animals. There is also a contamination/impurity concern called 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) that can form in honey when heated or stored long periods. Cosmetic safety reviews (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) note that some programs ask for safety substantiation before including manuka honey in certified products.
